One more night til mix night.

In our sad and impractical day and age, I admit it: I hate second albums. I especially hate second albums when first albums are amazing. It’s the anticipation. That dumb anticipation of expecting exactly what the first album was, but expecting it to be different too. I almost feel bad for the artists that compose amazing debuts. Afterward they're left scrutinized until dropping album number two, and at that point it’s impossible for them to go right. Different and sameness rarely share a common ground. If a band wants to experiment, they’re usually chastised for it. If a band chooses to sound exactly as they were on album number one, they’re penalized for not going a step further. I hate critics. I don’t like expectations. And I certainly don’t like comparing second albums with first albums..

.. ha ha.

Alright. The Arcade Fire. You knew it was coming. So how would I compare Neon Bible with Funeral? Well, I never thought Funeral was that good. After hearing a leaked Neon Bible though, I’d say Funeral was excellent. If you skip buying their album when it's out March 6th, at least call their album's number: 1-866-Neon Bible. (yes, their album has it's own phone number.. and website) I was occupied for houuurs.

MP3: Intervention - The Arcade Fire

MP3: Black Mirror - The Arcade Fire

Beruit's new EP, Lon Gisland, also came out on Ba Da Bing! a few days ago. It features a new version of Scenic World. And I'm not sure if it's been touched on, but Lon Gisland sounds a lot like Long Island said in a very bad staten island accent.

MP3: Elephant Gun - Beirut

welcome back Joey.

Besnard Lakes

I'm not lazy. I'm just tired all the time. Actually, I had a lot of work to get done. It's always hard for me to find the time or motivation to sit down and ramble. But time has come, like time always does. So here I am. About to ramble about The Besnard Lakes; a quirky group from Montreal. Apparently The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse. Who would've guessed? Have a listen to this song from their upcoming February release;

Take Pills

No! don't. But do download these:

MP3: Take Pills - Panda Bear
MP3: Comfy in Nautica - Panda Bear

Wow. Panda Bear's new stuff from his upcoming Person Pitch isn't bad at all. If you're into bizarre experimental stuff, it's actually amazing. (think Akron/Family, Beach House) Noah Lennox, Animal Collective member, still rings in that Animal Collective-y goodness with his weird solo melodies. His music puts you in something like a trance when listening.. a good stupor. It makes you feel like sleeping with your eyes open. And having aesthetic reveries.. about pandas, of course.

Ssssssion!

No matter how many times I listen to Nick Cave, his Bad Seeds, or The Birthday Party, I always tend to get a bit frightened. Not very, only a bit. It's that voice. That dark, cryptic voice. It never fails at reminding me of scenes in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry as a tranny is and forever will be scary. Ssion have done a swell job at covering The Birthday Party's "Nick The Stripper"; they've also done a swell job at not reminding me of tranny Tim Curry.. of course, I mean sound-wise. Appearance wise, well, I'll leave that for you to decide..

Does It Offend You, Yeah?

No it doesn’t. Nothing really offends me, honestly. Does It Offend You, Yeah? Shouldn’t offend anyone.. and unless you’re against naughty cartoons and cool synth sounds, you’ll find their electronic noise to be surprisingly pleasing. I’d like to quote: "It sounds like they’ve been eating Daft Punk and Justice tunes for three days, and just taken a giant electro shit". That’s probably the best description I’ve ever heard. Ever. I’m not exactly sure how an electro shit is generated, but if it were possible to have an electro shit, Does It Offend You, Yeah? might be a good one. You know, a 'take your magazine in and read it'-worthy one.

MP3: Battle Royale - Does It Offend You, Yeah?

If only..

Everything was as endearing as this picture is. Inspired by old pop records, one-hit-wonders, TV jingles, and internet porn, come The Ballet. They’re gay, clearly cool, and very DIY oriented, pressing 500 copies of their first CD, MATTACHINE! and putting them in silk-screened envelopes all by themselves. Catchy bubblegum pop made by queers. Hmm.. you know you're interested.

MP3: I Hate The War - The Ballet

I also meant to put this on the mix yesterday. Thieves Like Us are cool too, even if they aren't queer and inspired by immoral internet movies .

Evenin'.

Oh god. I was googling SNL images and looking for a good pic to accompany this post. Never image-google Chris Farley. Ever. I settled for lightning. I have too many songs to combine on one mix and upload. I figured for now on (or for tonight anyway) two separate mixes could be a decent idea. It shouldn't be that confusing.. electro on Electro.. everything else on Everything Else. Come on.

Enjoy.

'Electro Mix' Tracklisting:

Le Disko (Boys Noize vocal mix) - Shiny Toy Guns
We Share Our Mother's Health (Ratatat Remix) - The Knife

My Egyptian Lover (Loose Cannons Remix) - Space Cowboy
Supermassive Mandy - The Spinto Band vs Muse
Wildcat (E*vax Remix) - Ratatat

La Duchess Anne (Safety Scissors Remix) - Grizzly Bear

'Everything Else Mix' Tracklisting (I'm considering this Mix 10):

How Does That Grab You Darling - Nancy Sinatra

The Silent Years

I like. If you fancy Cold War Kids-esque vocals and cute stories, you might like The Silent Years too. Or at least the MP3 below anyway. They're interesting, a little different. I mean, the MP3 sounds exactly like something you think you've heard before. Still, a good listen. Their self-titled album came out last year. I can't tell you about it, because I haven't listened to the whole thing. But you can always buy it, and stop being so goddamn frugal using the hype machine.

MP3: Someone to Keep Us Warm - The Silent Years

Just because..

..there are cooler dances in this video than in thriller and your junior prom combined.

So. Trash Fashion. Cool clothes, cool video. Oh, yes, yes, yes. I now know what a Rave is, thanks to Dave. And though I've yet to be convinced that they aren't a complete joke, here's an MP3 anyway. (I think it's actually on one of the mixes.. somewhere.) To make it easier,

MP3: Rave Dave - Trash Fashion

AND, because I still haven't quite figured out how to pronounce chk chk chk, here are two MP3's off of their upcoming album, Myth Takes, due out March 4th.

Tracklisting as follows:

2. All My Heroes Are Weirdos
3. Must Be The Moon

Books or Shoes?

Two very different but good things. I know I like reading a decent book occasionally, as well as wearing a good pair of kicks. Especially if the book is full of endearing pictures and the shoes are well overdue for a throw out. Though redirecting my thoughts more toward music, by converging good and books together, we're left with Goodbooks. Goodbooks and Good Shoes are two separate bands, having nothing to do with each other, but two very good bands. Good Shoes are fast, English, and difficult to understand; as Goodbooks are an electronic ear pleaser that have just been remixed by Crystal Castles. Good things are usually as their name, so go look. Add their songs to your myspace player, so you too, can be good.

MP3: Goodbooks - Leni (Goodbooks vs. Crystal Castles)

MP3: May Lannoye - Good Shoes
