holy dances

Ah, Beach House. Second post for the 29th. Couldn't help it really, I don't work Fridays during the day, I really have nothing better to do. And besides, Devotion is just so great- dreamlike, shoegaze-y, abstract, bizzarre. I love how it sounds just like the stuff from their first S/T album but enhanced, sort of. Illusory yet pragmatic. Easy to listen to when you're doing absolutely nothing, or attempting to sleep.

From their second album Devotion:

MP3: Home Again - Beach House (YSI)
MP3: Holy Dances - Beach House (YSI)

Labels:

Stiff Records/ Punk New Wave Compiler

MP3: You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory - Johnny Thunders (YSI)

That's right, another something that absolutely had to be done. HAD TO BE. The Specials, The Stranglers, The Replacements, The Lords of The New Church, The Flying Lizards, Bauhaus, The Vapors, X-Ray Spex, Bow Wow Wow, Nick Lowe, Lew Lewis, The Drones, Generation X?! Then of course, if you aren't familair with those, there are the more obvious contributors, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Joe Jackson, Gang of Four. You've also got the Stiff Records artists, the almighty punk label, home to Elvis Costello, Richard Hell, Ian Dury, and (I'd go the whole wide world, I'd go the whole wide word, just to find her) Wreckless Eric. There's also Factory records (which I got to in December), and a whole bunch of others.

Thank god for punk, even though it's not the greatest genre (greatest? not sure) Or thank Stiff Records. Or.. all of the artists I just mentioned.

Alas, music is better than rambled sentances.

MP3: Veronica - Wreckless Eric (YSI)
MP3: Less Than Zero - Elvis Costello (YSI)
MP3: Kiss Off - Violent Femmes (YSI)
MP3: Open Your Eyes - The Lords of the New Church (YSI)
MP3: Oh Bondage, Up Yours! - X-Ray Spex (YSI)
MP3: Call Me - Blondie (YSI)
MP3: Male Model - The Undertones (YSI)
MP3: Concrete Jungle - The Specials (YSI)
MP3: Sheena is a Punk Rocker - The Ramones (YSI)
MP3: I Wish it Would Rain - Wreckless Eric (YSI)
MP3: I Got The Hots - The Soft Boys (YSI)
MP3: Sverige - The Stranglers (YSI)
MP3: Kiss Me On The Bus - The Replacements (YSI)
MP3: Turning Japanese - The Vapors (YSI)
MP3: Insomnia - The Records (YSI)
MP3: Staring at the Rude Boys - The Ruts (YSI)

Quite a lengthy assortment. You have no idea how long the html tagging took.

As for recently released stuff- The Whigs' new album is decent. Especially if you're into Dinasour Jr. Also, The Whigs' website is rather impressive graphic-wise. Go check it out.

From Mission Control:
MP3: 1000 Wives - The Whigs (YSI)
MP3: Sleep Sunshine - The Whigs (YSI)

On a side note, I'm awesome at guitar hero.
On another side note, DJing with Kid Indie in the basement of Annex tonight.

There it is
Later,

MP3: Ever Fallen In Love With Someone You Shouldn't've - The Buzzcocks (YSI)

you goddamn doppelganger

So, I've been having an unpleasant few couple of weeks. I haven't had internet in my apartment since the start of January, my Mac double clicks everything when I hold the mousepad button down, (which in turn makes my windows dissappear when I don't want them to, I can't highlight anything, I pause my itune tracks when I want them to play, etc) one of my screen hinges are broken as well. Also- in Chinatown there have been parades every morning - with drums - on my street. Which I don't mind, except they start around 9 am.

But enough complaining on my part, because hey, These New Puritans' new album came out, and it's called Beat Pyramid (beat pyramid..? note tavern? chord obelisk?), and it's 15 tracks in total. I suppose there are so many tracks because each one is only about a minute and a half long. I've already sort of described their sound a few months ago: Joy Division meets The Horrors- something like that. I think the album sounds really great, but I can't tell if I feel this way solely in contrast of the bad early Björk/Sugarcubes-esque music that's playing quietly in the background of the cafe I'm presently at. Could be so- and although I'd like to think the former, the latter might make more sense. I'll leave that for you to decide. Get it here.

MP3: Infinity Ytinifni - These New Puritans (YSI)
MP3: Doppelganger - These New Puritans (YSI)
MP3: Swords of Truth - These New Puritans (YSI)

Just because it's better than anything I've listened to all day long besides The Kinks' There's Too Much On My Mind.. ah, what a good one.. Nick and his Seeds' new single, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - Which I'd upload myself, if the cafe's wireless speed was better. Get it at Sixeyes*.

Take care, stay warm;

boom

I haven't forgotten about my duties as a blogger, just more or less put them off due to internet-less circumstances (besides the seldom cafe stop, it's been about 2 weeks) I also haven't been doing much lately besides netflixing documentaries (Don't Look Back currently) Including Gimme Shelter which was by far, one of the best I've ever seen- solely because of how crazy the Hell's Angels and Hippies get. As per coming back with a boom, here are the Sonics:

MP3: Have Love Will Travel - The Sonics (YSI)
MP3: Psycho - The Sonics (YSI)
MP3: Maintaining My Cool - The Sonics (YSI)

Ghostland Observatory are a band I've been recently getting very much into. You probably already know about them since they've been around for a while, releasing a few albums including 2006's Paparazzi Lightning. They remind me of a less galaxy-oriented Midnight Juggernauts, or a less new-wave inspired White Rose Movement- electro-rock sort of thing. So-

From Paparazzi Lightning:
MP3: I'll Be Suzy - Ghostland Observatory (YSI)
MP3: Sad Sad City - Ghostland Observatory (YSI)

From delete.delete.i.eat.meat...:
MP3: Over Again - Ghostland Observatory (YSI)
MP3: Black Box - Ghostland Observatory (YSI)

In the 80s/90s, there weren't too many bizarre experimental-psychedelic bands that were popular enough to gain any substantial recognition, besides Lush or Stereolab. Such bands as The Telescopes, Galaxie 500, and Spacemen 3 were all kind of forgotten about. The UK's Shoegazing emergence in the early 80's-early 90' made way for many very similiar- minimalistic type outfits- sans many vocals, overdriven psychedelia, long boring guitar riffs, etc. (Spacemen 3: first picture in the post)

From Spacemen 3's Playing With Fire:
MP3: Honey - Spacemen 3 (YSI)
MP3: Revolution - Spacemen 3 (YSI)

Because I saw The Teenagers last week:
MP3: Selflove - The Teenagers (YSI)

Because I saw The Ssion last week:
MP3: My Life is Beautiful - The Ssion (YSI)
MP3: College - The Ssion (YSI)
