So, tis Halloween. I put up an "official Halloween" post a few days ago (few down). It's not very scary.

The Department of Eagles don't really have anything to do with the holiday at all. (besides the semi-frightening and woodsy album artwork, which I think is great). However, might as well post up something good whilst I'm posting the flyer for tonight's party at Ruff Club. Should be a fun night.. see it here.

The following tracks are from Department of Eagles new In Ear Park, which could very well be one of my favorite albums of 2008. It came out the beginning of October. One of those dark, terrific, every song is amazing albums that you're still listening to 5 years later. Get it!

Upon first listen, you might expect The Fireman to be some kind of weird new indie band from California or New Zealand. You might give them a few plays or more, not really anticipating all that much because after all, you hear an excess of indie bands nowadays, it's difficult to give every new band an actual shot. You might even ponder quietly to yourself "They sound a bit like Radiohead mixed with The Beatles...".

The thing is, what's behind The Fireman IS Paul McCartney. Yes! (and Youth). The album Electric Arguments flaunts Paul's more experimental and serious side, that most people (including myself) are somewhat oblivious to. The Fireman have had two albums prior to Electric Arguments, I suggest you give them a listen as well. That Paul. He just keeps 'em coming. Pre-order @ Amazon.

YES! Sebastian Grainger's new album Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains comes out the 21st. It's so great that I truly feel obliged to blog about it. Like DFA1979, kind of, but fuzzier, lighter and with guitars.. makes you feel good. The vocals are the best part of everything though, which you already knew would be. A solid, very solid album. Every single song I like and wish I could post. Pick it up when it comes out or pre-order it from amazon.

My favorite Sonic Youth albums were all released in the mid 90's. Solid tracks, somewhat traditional style, a bit of a chorus or returning melody. Their early stuff was too weird and experimental for my taste (maybe Sister and Daydream Nation holding some exceptions). The early stuff wasn't hard to listen to or anything- I just prefer Washing Machine to Bad Moon Rising. Anyway, not great at explaining, here it is:

New Cut Copy album In Ghost Colours comes out the 8th of April, which reminds me of how good a month April is for releases: Les Savy Fav's After the Balls Drop, Shout Out Louds' Impossible EP, Islands' Arm's Way, Tapes 'N Tapes' Walk It Off, The Brian Jonestown Massacre's My Bloody Underground- which I'm really looking forward to, etc.
About Cut Copy's new album: I think In Ghost Colours doesn't surpass Bright Like Neon Love, but is a suitable follow up album. It's lacking a Going Nowhere-type song, an album definer so to speak. I think it's decent though- number one on the Aussie charts right now anyway..

Morning Sun?

Yes, it's coming up at this very moment, as I sit here idle on ichat, sans sleep, and write about a band called: The Ruby Suns.

So, they hail from New Zealand. Island-inspired psychedelic rock meets cosmic-inspired chaotic niceness. So good! Especially their second album Sea Lion, and especially Morning Sun, particularly because 3:20 in, the first half of the song leaks into the second half, and the second half sounds completely different than the first half. (The same goes for Blue Penguin about 1:45 in, or is that where the song starts?). If you're not into experimental sanctuary-esque chants, or Panda Bear, or anything bizarre and crooning, you probably won't be into The Ruby Suns. But- if you're willing to listen and give them a chance: don't fret and be patient, the muted humming eventually leads into vocals and.. some kind of beat.

Cold Hard Times

Just got home from seeing Chicago 10, which was pretty good, apart from the severe and somewhat annoying animation. Otherwise the documentary had some pretty cool archival footage from the anti-war protests of the 1968 democratic convention.. with Alan Ginsberg, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, bunch of other hippies.

Random bit of Abbie Hoffman history:
At Woodstock in 1969, Hoffman interrupted The Who's performance to attempt a protest speech against the jailing of John Sinclair of the White Panther Party. He grabbed a microphone and yelled, "I think this is a pile of shit! While John Sinclair rots in prison. . ." The Who's guitarist, Pete Townshend, unhappy with the interruption, cut Hoffman off mid-sentence, shouting, "Fuck off! Fuck off my fucking stage!" He then struck Hoffman with his guitar, sending the interloper tumbling offstage, to the approving roar of the crowd.

There's actually a clip of the incident included on The Who's 30 Years of Maximum R&B box set. Kind of funny:

So anyway, new Duke Spirit album? not half bad, literally- about half the songs I actually like. For some reason I always have second thoughts when listening to a band led mainly by a girl vocalist, probably because all of my favorite vocal artists are all essentailly boys (Davies, Dylan, Drake, Cohen, Hazlewood, Moore, etc, etc) Not that it matters, because the vocals consummately fit the sound. Indie-power-pop is what it is, I'll take it- half of it at least.

Moby's latest album comes out March 31st (his 9th studio album) It's called Last Night.

Moby says:

"Last Night is basically a love letter to dance music in New York City. So, The Clean. One of the first influential punk bands to come from New Zealand (1978). If you've ever listened to them you already know that their songs are short but awesome. I usually don't go for the Whirlwind Heat-esque style of making 2-minute-something long songs, and only 2-minute-something long songs. (I'd rather listen to 17 minute long Sister Rays.) However, the 70's garage rock feel totally makes up for the lack of song length. Plus, I love a band with plenty of lo-fi goodness and organs, think Yo La Tengo meets Galaxie 500 and Wire. Their Anthology is huge and came out a few years ago on non other than, Merge.

Easy to listen to when you're doing absolutely nothing, or attempting to sleep.

So, I've been having an unpleasant few couple of weeks. I haven't had internet in my apartment since the start of January, my Mac double clicks everything when I hold the mousepad button down, (which in turn makes my windows dissappear when I don't want them to, I can't highlight anything, I pause my itune tracks when I want them to play, etc) one of my screen hinges are broken as well. Also- in Chinatown there have been parades every morning - with drums - on my street. Which I don't mind, except they start around 9 am.

But enough complaining on my part, because hey, These New Puritans' new album came out, and it's called Beat Pyramid (beat pyramid..? note tavern? chord obelisk?), and it's 15 tracks in total. I suppose there are so many tracks because each one is only about a minute and a half long. I've already sort of described their sound a few months ago: Joy Division meets The Horrors- something like that. I think the album sounds really great, but I can't tell if I feel this way solely in contrast of the bad early Björk/Sugarcubes-esque music that's playing quietly in the background of the cafe I'm presently at. Could be so- and although I'd like to think the former, the latter might make more sense. I'll leave that for you to decide. Get it here.

In the 80s/90s, there weren't too many bizarre experimental-psychedelic bands that were popular enough to gain any substantial recognition, besides Lush or Stereolab. Such bands as The Telescopes, Galaxie 500, and Spacemen 3 were all kind of forgotten about. The UK's Shoegazing emergence in the early 80's-early 90' made way for many very similiar- minimalistic type outfits- sans many vocals, overdriven psychedelia, long boring guitar riffs, etc. (Spacemen 3: first picture in the post)

That's what it looks like. Magnetic Fields' new album is awesome. So ridiculously distorted, so gritty, so saturated with white noise, really nice. Sounds like it was recorded live in the late 60's, and could serve as the background music in a bad 90's movie, the kind where the only thing good about the movie is the music solely, and you're going God damnit, this is so bad, but the music, it's so good! (Xavier Says, especially). All the tracks on the album sound the same, which was done purposely, only took a month to record. Best song(s) as far as lyrics go would be California Girls and Too Drunk To Dream; hateful, discriminating, supurb.

Exploding Plastic Inevitable

Currently reading All Yesterday's Parties by Clinton Heylin has put me in an indefinate Velvets sort of stupor. I find that upon mentioning The Velvet Underground to others interested, two views are usually presented - generally against or completely for them. No in-between opinions. I also find that people who are opposed to them don't exactly know too much about them, usually, which is all the more reason for me to tell you more about them (even though I somewhat have a few times before). From the Cale years to the Yule years (which was primarily post Warhol) I think you'll find the following interesting..

Warhol did have much to do with the Velvet's beginning, including them in his "show" the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (above), having them play music whilst he showed his movies (and basically, what this post is all about). I'd explain the show to you, the show with music, films, lights, dance, slides, drugs, sex, etc. myself; however, the article from Larry McCombs below (an excerpt from All Yesterday's Parties, p. 24-27 and originally Boston Broadside) describes it better firsthand than I ever could secondhand, the depiction is amazing. When McCombs refers to musicians he's alluding to The Velvet Underground. The films he mentions I imagine include Warhol's Vinyl (Andy's interpretation of Burgess' A Clockwork Orange; with Edie Sedgwick), and Eat (with Robert Indiana).

It's hot, godawful, sticky, sweaty, miserable hot. The Place is jammed and there's hardly room to move. The waitress does her best, but it takes a while to get your drink and you're dying of thirst.

There's all sorts of mirrors and lights overhead, some of them rotating. Lights shining and blinking in a complex pattern, up one wall and along another. Red dots start moving through and around and among them, in a different pattern (or is it the same?)

Suddenly on the side wall there's a black and white movie, poor quality, like a badly done home movie, of a man eating. He eats slowly, savoring each bite, staring blankly off into space. He goes on eating. Music and noise begins to come from somewhere.

Now on the end wall there's another movie. People moving around - a girl? - several boys - one tall, well built blonde, lifting weights, posing, dressed in Levis and open black leather jacket with a white T-shirt underneath. He moves with a strange combination of cruelty and sensuous delight. The man on the side wall goes on eating, staring blankly at this scene once in a while. The lights continue to dance over and through the movies. The music gets louder; a voice begins to talk but you can't understand the words; there are shouts and screams occassionally.

There's a man strapped to a chair, stripped to the waist, being whipped. Are those his screams? No, they aren't in time. The man goes on eating. The girl smokes. Is she part of the whipping scene, or has she somehow slipped over from the eating movie? The music is very loud now, with a driving rock and roll beat. The muscular blonde is moving slowly about with a whip which he curls about his body.

Suddenly, he flings himself into dance, while the whipping goes on behind him. Suddenly that film moves to the top of the screen and below it appears another view of the same scene, earlier or late? The whipping is in the foreground, or is it a dance? Lights, noise, screams, - the man on the side of the wall eats slowly, fondles a cat, stares at the audience.

Various tortures, fights, dances - all mixed together, Inextricable. Lights shining unbearably bright in your eyes. Dancing lights on the wall. Nasty torturous dancing with whips and lighted matches. The man eats, watches, watches you. Louder, faster, noisier.

Suddenly the films end. The noise and music go on. Several people have appeared from somewhere. They stand in front of the screen, tuning instruments. The noise of their tuning, the electric buzzes and hums, begins to blend with the noise and music from the films. Then they gradualy take over. Behind them on the wall are movies of a girl. One, two, several views of her in different movies. Close-up, far away, they begin to zoom in and out in time with the music. Eyes, mouths, noses, she stares, blinks, licks her lips. On stage now is the cruel blonde man, with his whip, dancing with the tall masculine blonde girl in silver lame costume. The lights have become a dim blue flicker, but a flicker that goes faster and slower and pauses now and then, just as your eyes get used to each kind of flicker. Dancers on the floor, with huge strips of silver material that flash above their heads as they dance. Clean-cut, straight looking kids, working hard at dancing to the noise.

Bright green and red spotlights, the dancers silhouetted on the walls in great grimacing poses. The musicians occasionally revealed, sweating over thier instruments, grinding out a noise that has music in it somewhere. They're watching the movies, watching eachother, watching you. Too much happening - it doesn't go together. But sometimes it does - suddenly the beat of the music, the movements of the various films, the pose of the dancers, blend into something meaningful, but before your mind can grab it, it's become random and confusing again. Your head tries to sort something out, make sense of something. The noise is getting to you. You want to scream, or throw yourself about with the dancers, something, anything.

The noise builds to a climax and ends. The dancers pause. Everyone looks a bit weary. The musicians diddle around with their instruments and amplifiers. The lights and films go on. One of the musicians is a girl. Or is it?

They start again. There's an electrified violin making horrible bag pipe sounds against the noisy background. It's grating, terrible, and yet your mind latches onto that bit of tune against all the chaos. It's almost a relief.

The films are doing strange things. The blonde girl becomes a brunette - girl or boy? Showers of colored lighs suddenly burst upward from the drums with a crash of cymbals and shoot accross the ceilling and walls like a fireworks burst. The dancers on the floor are looking tired and ecstatic and bored, all at once. The music gets noisier, the voilin is frantically screaming a tune, higher and higher. On the screens, some of the views of the girl are replaced by films of the blonde boy and silver lame girl, dancing, fighting, torturing eachother with the whip. The real pair are there too, making weird shadows on the wall, the boy dancing, but writhing in torment with his hands over his head.

The music is lost in the chaos of noise. Are there children chanting or singing? The amplified violin goes higher and higher, becomes a shriek, a feedback noise, a regular dit-dah-dit of unbearable Morse code screaming above the other noise. It all builds to a tremendous climax. Then it goes on and on and on and on. You wish it would stop. The musicians build wilder and wilder. The drummer hits a shuddering beat that you feel through the floor. It's all coming to an end. But it doesn't. It goes on. The lights flash in your eyes. The noises all blend into one and your mind tries to sort out little bits of rhythm and tune. The screaming Morse message is still there, but you only hear now when you listen for it. The dancers on the floor are sweating, looking like they can't bear any more of it all. But it goes on and on. Finally it all comes to a shuddering screaming end, the music and noise die down, the films flicker out. Only the colored lights still dance accross the walls. The musicians and dancers leave., looking wilted. You sit there for a while, finally find your waitress, finally leave, it's hot. What can you say?

Now that you're brain is saturated with Warhol and The Velvets I hope you don't mind me departing with the almost all improvisional, 17-minute long Sister Ray.

It's that time again. You know, for a genuine Christmas post. While you're going Noooooo not more christmas music! or Damnit Danzie!, keep in mind that this isn't just ordinary Christmas music I've posted below, but rather Christmas music via the Arcade Fire. It was recorded some time before the band's first EP and Funeral. Wikipedia explains it well. The album was recorded at a party (hence the quality), supposedly given out amongst friends, and eventually ended up on the internet. Ah, yes. The good ol' internet.

If you're a Joy Division or a New Order or an early OMD (Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark) fan you already know about the British independent label, Factory Records, which started around 30 years ago - 1978 - about 11 years before I was born - which means that yes, my birthday is coming up (19, February 20th). You might thank Tony Wilson in particular, for that exceptional 80's english rock/post punk sound listened to so frivolously.

Cabaret Voltaire formed in 1973, are considered industrial tech house, and aren't very good. Of course I'm also not too much into industrial tech house. They're named after a nightclub in Zurich, which was (sort of) the founder of this movement; they also have a song entitled: Do The Mussolini, which probably means be a fascist dictator. etc.

I've recently gotten into A Certain Ratio. They're featured in the movie 24 Hour Party People where Tony Wilson (manager, played by Steve Coogan) calls them 'Joy Division but better dressed'. I would look into the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack if I were you. Right here. Blurt formed around 1980. They based the majority of their tracks upon repetitive minimalistic guitar, which is an interesting concept, the music not so interesting.

OMD, who later left Factory for Virgin, are widely known for their synth-pop-esque sounds, and also for the single If You Leave. The Durutti Column (sometimes referred to as the 'Definitive Factory Records band'), was named after Buenaventura Durruti (spanish anarchist). The band included Vinni Reilly - who previously played guitar with Ed Banger and the Nosebleeds (just thought I'd throw that in, cool name), and who also played guitar later on Morrissey's 88 solo album, Viva Hate. Monaco was a side project of Peter Hook (New Order bassist), formed mid 90's, very similar to New Order (for obvious reasons..), didn't last very long. The Wendys formed in the early 90's, never reached much success, still a pretty decent indie rock/pop band.

What I've been listening to lately: Portishead and Mazzy Star, specifically Portishead's 1994 debut Dummy and Mazzy Star's 1990 debut She Hangs Brightly. Classic albums if you're anywhere near interested in the Trip Hop/Dream Pop-centric weird 90's obscure sound with girl vocals.. a slightly ambiguous movement of the 90's, which I'm slowly but surely learning about since in 1990 I was actually only 2 years old, impossible to know about She Hangs Brightly then. For something similair I'd check out (if I were you) The Long Blondes, The Jealous Girlfriends, Cat Power, Blonde Redhead, you know, etc.

It's a good thing that someone invented the blog so I can tell you about Link Wray, essentially an electric guitar genius. He's got some intense distorted sounds that are worth listening to, over and over again, in complete admiration. Think: Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Dick Dale- except maybe cooler. He was the first to really poineer overdrive and fuzz distortions with the electric guitar; so when someone refers to something as gritty 60's they're probably referring to Link without realizing it. Also the first to use the power chord. Impressive. No vocals in his first album with the Raymen. Who cares. It's awesome.

A little bit of obscure 60's/70s. I always thought of the Pebbles and Nuggets volumes as amazing because none of the songs ever make any sense worth considering. Although If I were on something I'm sure I could create some kind of relevent meaning.. then again, maybe not.

I read a book a while ago titledWhite Bicycles by Joe Boyd, I'm sure I mentioned this to you already. Boyd once ran a club in the UK, and he mentions in his book a band that played at his club a number of times called the Soft Machine. (also a Burroughs book.. if you're into Burroughs any.. the book is what the band is actually named after. Amazing really how many bands are named after books) There's not much of any vocals on Bundles, the album which the following tracks are from. There are some decent guitar riffs. I imagine the Soft Machine's earlier stuff (early 60s) has to have more substance to it. Will post on that once I get into it.. They supporeted Pink Floyd at Joe's club. Go read about it..

MGMT's Oracular Spectacular, still, and Holy Fuck's LP. I've especially been listening to Annie Lennox's newest Songs of Mass Destruction, and Thurston Moore's Trees Outside the Academy. All very good albums, all highly reccommended, all worth your while. Also a lot of Sonic Youth's somewhat old stuff in light of Thurston Moore's somewhat new stuff.

About The Vaselines: a somewhat obscure, somewhat desolate late 80's/early 90's band from Scottland. You might know the song Molly's Lipscovered by Nirvana, also covered by a small band from the UK called The Paddingtons. They only released one whole album and two short EPs throughout their career. Just enough to make a decent compilation..

Another Radiohead post.

So it's out!!! Finally!! In Rainbows officially came out yesterday. If you don't own it, click here. If you do own it, then this post will deem itself pointless because it's just my opinion on it/myself describing it to you (which one million+ other people have conveniently already done). I don't think the album is safe and/or sparse and/or bare. I do think the album is practically unblemished/flawless, though I don't like the beginning of Reckoner. I do like Faust Arp incredibly much. Think of the album as a whole bunch of Pyramid Song type tracks compiled together. All of the string and piano parts are amazing. Easily my favorite album of 2007. And no, I'm not Radiohead bias, I just enjoy absurdly great things. I wish I still owned a car so I could get lost somewhere in upstate New York with this album. (something I did with Ok Computer, Amnesiac, and Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves many, many times.)

I suppose I can tell you about the new Bangers & Cash EP from Spank Rock and Benny Blanco. Albums that have ALL explicit track titles are defnitely worth some kind of listen, even if it's only a half-hearted one. It's always sort of cool to rap along with songs ( i.e. Pu$$y, B-O-O-T-A-Y, and Bitch!) that you can feel lyrically eminent about.

SPLIT TOUR EPS

Are probably my favorite kind.. my most prized vinyl is a split Cribs/Chiefs special edition UK tour only copy.. with The Cribs covering t'Chiefs Modern Way, Kaisers covering Another Number. Anyway.. just recently acquired Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem's split tour EP, comprised of two tracks. May I present you with the Arcade Fire's version of Poupée de Cire/Poupée de Son which was originally composed by Serge Gainsbourg, covered by Belle & Sebastian on the Fans Only DVD.. etc. LCD covers Joy Division's No Love Lost. This track is if you (unfortunately) didn't get to see them live and grab hold of a copy.

Just heard Louis XIV's new digital release, The Distances From Everyone To You EP. It's not too bad, though they still sound like an eccentric mixture of T.Rex and The White Stripes. The best part of the EP is most definitely their bonus track- a cover of Queen's Flash. Not sure if they sampled Queen's actual version of the song and just added vocals.. (for the Flash.. savior of the universe.. Flash he's a miracle part). Either way it's a pretty impressive cover, supposedly for the Flash Gordon television series on SCI FI.

Holy Fuck's new LP is decent, not enough vocals for my taste to call the album fantastic or recommend it. Mgmt's Oracular Spectacular is spectacular; the same goes for The Ssion's Oppurtunity Bless My Soul, an album that came out a few years ago (before they dropped "the" and became simply Ssion.. also before Street Jizz) an impressive album for such a trivial band. Anita Ward is classic. Tears for Fears are classic. The Birthday Party are classic. I can't help but wonder if Nick Cave would be pissed at me for me putting his track after Tears for Fears'.. although it's really just a matter of random selection. KOL are sort of classic.. at least The Bucket is anyway. Put the Boy 8 Bit remix on there solely because of how good the Any Way You Choose To Give It remix was (Black Ghosts). Track #9 serves as the best song on this enjoyable October e-compilation. Brandy Alexander is my favorite Feist song (and Walkman song..) Was tempted to put a Styx song up here tonight (cough.. Renegade..cough) very tempted. I saved you. I've not posted any Styx on Mewzick yet what so ever. Impressive! Next post expect a write-up on a band called The Vaselines, 1980's punk-rock band. Opened for Nirvana in the 90's. Odd, not known, pretty cool, etc.

A strange mix. Because I am, that bored. The Cash track is live from Madison Square Garden. The Nick Drake track comes from Family Tree, a collection of rare and unmastered Nick Drake recordings that every human being in the world should own. The T.Rex track is off of Tanx, a tremendous, melodic, geniusly created album, (my third favorite T.Rex album, in line after Beard of Stars which is #1 and Electric Warrior which is #2) The Deerhunter track comes from the Cryptograms LP, which you've all read about endlessly already on the internet's online bloggerdom, it's great, you already know, etc. The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs has got, quite frankly, the best obscure love songs that you can still actually call "love songs". Last one will be familiar to you all. (about 2 minutes in.. think: Levi's Ad) It comes from Little Annie's Songs from the Coalmine Canary. She's got a peculiar, distict sound- original. Alright.

If you've not heard of Rework yet (I did just recently, you might know Love love love yeah) You're going to be so, so happy I've introduced the two of you. Rework are from Germany, and remind me of Ladytron mixed with New Young Pony Club... with not as annoying vocals, and almost better than both. The LP Pleasure is Pretty comes out Oct. 5th. It's F ing one of my favorite albums to come from a band I've never heard of. Gets repetitive, but if it's good in the first place, who cares if the tracks all sound like different versions of eachother! kidding. The bonus, Bus Driver, is my favorite.

I generally don't mention what books I'm currently reading (...The Wind-Up Bird Cronicle...) Although I will mention that some time ago I read a book titled Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. It's been my favorite book for quite sometime. My point being that it's a movie now and and you should see it. (although you'd be better off reading the book) If I could be anyone for two years it would be Chris Mccandless. The movie actually isn't that bad for a book-made-movie. Emile Hirsch plays a similiar character to what I'd imagined Chris to be. Movies almost always dissappoint me, this one's worth the 10 bucks spent.. Plus, I was infatuated with the bus in the book, and I'm pretty sure they use the same one in the movie(?)

It's a frustrating thing. It just seems too easy to title a post by it's contents. Like, "New Tiga" or "New Gossip"; hence why my post titles are always stupid things like "Niiiice or "Alright" or "boobs" or "I hate coming up with post titles". I try so hard to come up with something clever and orginal, although it always seems to work adversly. Getting to the track. I love Tiga and everything Tiga does. Not only is he talented, great, etc, but he actually makes me want to listen to The Gossip, again.. something I swore I wouldn't do for at least another five months. Sort of a minimal-esque track, get's better about 3:20 or so in.

Have had the Sexual Earthquake in Kobe track lying around in the library for a while.. It's most definitely one of the better remixes Toxic Avenger's got (although they're all pretty F-ing good). Archie Bronson Outfit's always a nice blues-y listen. Jab Jab comes from their most recent release, Derdang Derdang. Not very big on Space Cowboy, but the Mstrkrft remix of Running Away (which comes out September 17th) is killer.. Black Lip's Good Bad Not Evil is a thoroughly good album, which I think I've previously mentioned, certainly not botched garage anymore. I basically just put the Freezepop track up there for you to sample how bad of an album Future Future Future Perfect is. A compilation of bad synth. They remind me of a band called The Lovemakers, except that I think The Lovemakers are actually good. Wooo is off of Vitalic's Ok Cowboy. It's like a cool, up-to-date version of Annie Lenox's Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These), except different and sans vocals. Big Big Love would be the b-side off Foals' new single Mathletics. That's it.

I haven't had time to post much of anything recently. MAYBE if there was a machine invented that could electronically grab what I'm thinking / listening to and type it / upload it to the blog (Sort of like that thing Stephen Hawking uses, except that his voice synthesizer would be more of a bloggethesizer/uploadethesizer) THEN, I'd have more for you to read.

Although Chris Tucker is neurotic in practically every scene, he's still pretty awesome, making the Rush Hour threequel almost better than the earlier installments. You know when you hear an unfamiliar song, and you really like it, so you text message the lyrics to yourself so that later you can look it up on the internet? (what I do) Anyway, there's this scene in the movie where Jackie (Chief Inspector Lee) and Chris (Detective James Carter) go to a French Gentleman's Club in Paris, and showgirls start dancing on stage, and this cool song comes on. All I could really make out was "(french words)... Bonnie and Clyde.. (more french words).." And so, I texted 'Bonnie and Clyde with French Words' to myself, came home, looked it up, and sure enough, found what I was looking for. Score!

Bonnie & Clyde from Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot was released in 1968. All French, some English, delicate, classic, timeless, French Bossa. BETTER THAN ANYTHING FROM YELLE AND KITSUNÉ AND ED BANGER, COMBINED! (in a 1960's French Bossa sort of way, of course). The whole album definitely sounds like it belongs in the era it was made in, except for the Bonnie & Clyde track itself which is flawless and way ahead of it's time, for that time. FYI, Brigette Bardot is pretty hot (first picture).

Catching Up

Nice that the Justice track went over relatively well.. Yelle's Pop-Up comes out September 3rd. Even if you aren't French, nor understand a word of French, even if you hate 80s homage entirely, EVEN if you can't stand the idea of hearing a french-american-80s-pop inspired integration, I would still, even then, recommend listening to the album in it's entirety before you go off judging it and calling it bad names. Give it a chance. I did.

Explanation:
LSF's Let's Stay Friends (9/18, Frenchkiss) could easily be my favorite album of theirs simply because of What Would Wolves Do?. Mehdi's Lucky Boy track is back from the beggining of '07, but I've been listening to it nonstop, and that's reason to post, plus everyone always praises the Outlines remix and not the Surkin remix. Glaxo Babies are classic (my opinion), Conscience is from Nine Months to Disco which came out 1980 if you've not heard of Glaxo Babies or that album before.. Noisia makes awesome D&B/Breakbeat, and a nice change if (like me) you're not much into those two subgenres.. BDDC are house-y and suprisingly good. Interpol songs remixed are always worth a listen, good or not (in this case, fortunately good.. Phones are nice at doing remixes of heavy indie bands with strong vocals.. Editors, etc.). Added Oizo in there because he's a 90's minimal-master. Put Jichael Mackson in there because his name is Jichael Mackson. Nas' God's Son is my all-time favorite rap album (Listen to Heaven and be amazed, listen to Heaven instrumental and be even more amazed); anyway, that's why I put the Nas & Amy bastard pop-esque song in there. It's nice nice. Pulp song is a 'filler', everyone loves Jarvis. Probably spent a good half hour or more linking.

Here's a track from The Members' 1979 debut album At the Chelsea Nightclub. The Stiff single version of Solitary Confinement was part of the album's 2005 rerelease. (best version of the song).

The Wind-Up Bird's Whips was released back in '02, was not much into it then, very into it now. Aluminum is the "sort of" side project of Jack White's. If you don't own the album Aluminum, I suggest you fix that fault of yours. 3oh!3 are a duo from CO that make pretty decent hip hop merged with electro. They're also opening for Snoop (?!?!) soon out in Denver. I could've sworn I made an entire blog post about Woods before, though I can't find it at the moment, I truly suck at tagging. Something that's not depressing though, is Akron/Family's new album, Love is Simple, which I could listen to for 14 and a half days straight, eating nothing but kashi, drinking nothing but tea, staring only through kaleidoscopes. There are some artists/bands that never let down (Nick Drake, Radiohead). There are a few that let down on rare ocassions (VU). Then there are some that you can never count on. Ever. Akron/Family I'd put somewhere near that Nick Drake/Radiohead/basically timeless category.

Rummaging through music videos on the internet can, at times, lead to great successes. Other times surfing the web for a certain something can lead to unwanted, filthy, failures. Like Youtube, and it's annoying square segmentation boxes of bad digital quality. If you're looking for nice quality music videos, however, look no further than VBS.TV. Even if those damn boxes are only from my sometimes insufficient internet connection, Youtube is still a pansy in comparison. That's right, I said it. Plus VBS has all of the Arcade Fire's videos from the first album. Consecutively. They've also got Liars, and Chromeo, and Digitalism, and Deerhunter, and everyone else that I've blogged on and on about sans video links. (sorry for that, by the way). Go, enjoy. And check out SSION's Street Jizz more than one time. Not only because I'm an intern there now, but because it's a pretty damn cool site anyway.

Imagine Devendra Banhart's vocals mixed with Antony Hegarty's vocals from Antony and the Johnsons mixed with Fyfe's from Guillemots, only imagine the combination actually sounding normal. At first, the fusion seems like it might be awkward, but once you listen to Bombay Bicylcle Club you realize, Jack Steadman's nailed it! That's what it would sound like, and it sounds awesome. Plus the band is damn good. Better than having an ultimate ice cream experience at Cold Stone Creamery. (my previous definition of good) Now, listen to these demos and try, just try to disagree with me. Somebody needs to book them in New York. Or take me to Cold Stone Creamery.

Rogue Wave's third album, Asleep At Heaven's Gate comes out in September. I'm not too fond of contemporary simple stuff (think The Shins, Stars), not because it's bad, but because post listening I get all melancholy and weird. On ocassion though, I can go for it. I have been listening to Italian Bossa music every morning for the past five mornings, maybe why I'm not minding Asleep At Heaven's Gate as much as I would otherwise. It's a mature album, lovely, not as boring as I'm making it out to be.. you just need to be in the correct mood for it, like at 6 o' clock in the morning when sleep is somewhat of an issue. Out via Universal Republic next month.

Now, they may seem like they're trying too hard, but what's the sense of playing the music and not dressing and acting the part? That would be stupid, like Frank Sinatra pretending to be David Johansen. I was born in 1989. Which basically means that I've missed out on everything 80s-cool (Punky Brewster, Cabbage Patch Kids, WarGames, enlarged boom boxes.. etc) I thank bands like The Opposite Sex for reliving the past. Just got back from seeing The Cribs play at Bowery. Me and the goddamn Cribs. They weren't half bad.. White Rabbits played too, and were genius with three drummers. Saw half the first band, forgot the name of them... Moving on. I've been focusing way too much on specific genres lately, which is stupid. F that.
